Do you want to know the secret to perfect colour coordination?

Shhhhhh. Don’t tell anyone but we are about to let you in on a little secret. At the end of this article you should feel confident coordinating any colours in your interior design scheme. Gone are the days of hoping that your new lacquer coffee table will fit in with your green curtains before finding out that you have made a terrible misjudgement. Colour in interior design is what it is all about at its most basic level. Before you layer textures and furniture designs you need to know that your colour scheme works.

The standard colour wheel

For those of you not schooled in art or design the colour wheel is about to become your best furniture and interiors friend. To find perfectly complementing colours all you need to do is to look at a colour on the colour wheel and find the colour directly opposite. These are said to complement each other perfectly as within those two colours is the total spectrum of visible light. The idea is that if you want a colour to really zing then pair it with its complement.

Don't take our word for it though, check out some examples below:

Blue sofa and orange ottoman

This photo from Lushome, shows how a pop of orange can really set off this light blue colour scheme.

Purple accent and yellow accent chair and accessories

The purples and yellows in this scheme from Sophie Robinson complement each other perfectly. Neither are the dominant colour in the room, with each providing perfectly chosen accents throughout.
